BioThe Rumbanella Band, originating in the Congo in 1986, was established with the primary aim of performing Congolese rumba, a genre that already carried a sense of nostalgia compared to the fully electrified sounds of soukous at the time. The band's two guitarist-singers, Madou Lebon Mulowayi and Joseph 'Serpent' Kakonde, were both born in the early 1950s and had accumulated many years of experience performing in prominent Congolese musical ensembles. They came together once again in 2002 to create "El Congo," an enchanting album that harked back to the traditional style, featuring vocal harmonies, laid-back electric guitar melodies, and skillfully blended percussion on a selection of beloved Congolese classics.
