BioThe Blue Notes were a jazz sextet from South Africa headed by pianist Chris McGregor, trumpeter Mongezi Feza, bassist Johnny Dyani, tenor saxophonist Nikele Moyake, alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, and drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo. They established themselves on the European jazz scene after leaving their home country in 1964, where they continued to play and record until the 1970s. They are today regarded as one of the best free jazz bands of their age, with their music gaining a distinct character as a result of their incorporation of African forms such as Kwela into the progressive jazz ideals of the time.
