BioThe Manhattan Brothers were a groundbreaking South African singing group that rose to prominence in the 1940s. They played an important part in popularizing African harmony singing and contributing to the creation of isicathamiya and mbaqanga music styles, and were made up of four skilled members: Joe Mogotsi, Nathan Mdledle, Ronnie Sehume, and Rufus Khoza. When they won a singing competition in 1943, it led to their first recording deal and subsequent ascent to stardom. The Manhattan Brothers had a hugely successful career, touring all over the world and scoring countless songs. Though formal award records are few, their influence on South African music and contribution to vocal harmony cannot be emphasized, making them industry legends.
