BioToumast was established in the 1990s by Moussa Ag Keyna. Their debut album served as a testament to the struggles and disappointments endured by the Tuaregs. The songs touch on themes dear to Ishumar, encompassing nostalgia for nomadic life, love, the bitterness of exile, and criticism of politics. Ishumar bands draw inspiration from traditional melodies. Their lyrics reflect their adventurous lifestyles and deliver passionate calls to mobilise the younger generation in their homeland. These travelling musicians perform at nighttime celebrations in makeshift settlements. Their songs are recorded on tapes, duplicated, shared, or given away, spreading the Ishumar message throughout Tuareg regions, in camps or cities.
