BioFormed in 1972 in Lusaka, Zambia, WITCH, an acronym for We Intend To Cause Havoc, is one of the most influential bands of the Zamrock movement. WITCH helped pioneer a genre that reflected the cultural and political energy of post-independence Zambia by blending genres like psychedelic rock, funk, and traditional Zambian music.
Fronted by Emmanuel "Jagari" Chanda, the group started with garage rock and later developed its sound with fuzz-driven riffing, groovy basslines, and wailing vocals. They released their debut album, "Introduction," in 1973.
WITCH's music reflected the times and aspirations of their generation, making them the voice of a generation. Even though they disbanded in the 1980s with the decline of Zamrock, their influence lived on, and their records found international acclaim years later. The revival of interest in Zamrock during the 2010s led to the reissue of their albums and a resurgence in popularity.
