The group was formed in 2002 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for the infectious rhythms and grooves of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Drawing on their diverse musical backgrounds and influences, the group set out to create their own unique blend of Afrobeat that would reflect the energy and spirit of their hometown of Chicago. The Chicago Afrobeat Project has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including Nigerian Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, jazz saxophonist David Murray, and hip-hop artist JC Brooks, among many others.
