Eclectic Ugandan singer and songwriter, Priscilla Zawedde, popularly known as Azawi, releases a new album, Sankofa. This chart-topping 16-track album (plus one bonus) which was released October 9, 2023 by the Swangz Avenue-managed artist raises the bar higher  and cements her place in the Ugandan music industry.

Azawi’s new album release, "Sankofa," embodies the concept of "retrieving what was lost." This evocative choice reflects the album's deep sense of accountability and self- reflection, mirroring the profound themes interwoven within its tracks. The project explores diverse African urban genres such as afrobeats, amapiano, dancehall with a mixture of traditional Ugandan sounds.

The project starts with “Intro”- the sound of a crackling fire, transporting the listener to a late-night campfire. Gentle chants and rhythmic beats provide an atmospheric backdrop as Azawi delivers a reflective spoken verse. She asks thought-provoking questions, like "How can I know where I'm going if I don't know where I came from?" and "How do I get to the market if I can't remember which house I left from?" The intro sets the stage for a sonic journey that explores heritage and personal identity.

The second song, "Champion From Africa," exudes the lively vibes of Amapiano. It's defined by energetic log drums, subtle xylophone notes, and pulsating bassline riffs, crafting a dynamic and captivating soundscape. Azawi's vocals convey a deep sense of pride and resilience as she chants the infectious chorus: "I am a product of Africa, a champion from Africa. I conquer mountains and valleys. I'm a lifelong victor." Hints of Amapiano also surface in the 14th track, "Cash," where she artfully weaves local dialect into her verses.

Track number three dubbed "Egaali," offers a soulful portrayal of love and an unswerving commitment to her beloved. Throughout the song, she shares her astonishment at rediscovering love and captures the feeling of being pleasantly surprised by the intense emotions that have engulfed her. Lyrics such as "My rebellious heart is captivated, the culprit is you, my love. I've left the streets, I'm claimed" exemplify her readiness to embrace love wholeheartedly.

She collaborates with the Jamaican vocalist and DJ, Konshens, for "Summer Bae." Their vocal synergy enhances the song, creating an uplifting sonic ambiance for the audience to savor.

"Brand New" in Sankofa further elevates the album's quality with gentle chords, electric guitar notes, and brisk drum patterns. In this track, Azawi joyfully reminisces about her romance and the refreshing sensation which accompanies newfound love.

"Njagala Vibe," which features the renowned Kenyan Afropop ensemble, Sauti Sol, is a genuine mid-tempo Afrobeats track. Their partnership explores the theme of intense desire, an area of expertise for both. The lyrics, including phrases like "I've eagerly anticipated your arrival tonight. Let me satiate your desires," emphasize the urgency of a fervent rendezvous.

She teams up with Elijah Kitaka, a fellow Ugandan artist, for "Harder," a vibrant track distinguished by the presence of prominent lead guitar strings and subtle shakers. Their voices harmonize seamlessly in the chorus, while their verses brim with loyalty and dedication. On "Infinity," the production subtly echoes Tekno's 2019 hit, "Skeletun," reaffirming Azawi's ability to create heartfelt ballads that encapsulate the intricacies of love and desire.

"Elevated" is steeped in Afro-Pop, exuding passion and desire. Azawi collaborates with Rwandan singer-songwriter Mike Kayihura, compatriot Elijah Kitaka, and Kenyan artist Bensoul, infusing vibrant energy into the track. This collaboration elevates it to one of the album's standout pieces.

Azawi's talent for heartfelt compositions shines on "Lucky Day," where she rides the waves of an Afrobeats melody. Here, she delves into the significance of the day she encountered her lover, evoking a deep sense of gratitude.

Sankofa takes an intriguing twist with "Married Man." The electro-guitar strums & technique. Azawi reflects on the heartache of giving her love to a now-married lover, and her passionate delivery underscores her regret. Lyrics like "I knew I was wrong to give you my devotion. Lovemaking is so sweet. I thought we had chemistry" delve into the complexities of intimate relationships and the mixed emotions they bring.

On "Worship," Azawi fixates on her lover's physique, alternating between English and her native dialect. Her desire is palpable in lines like "You're a masterpiece, a classic by Picasso. Let me adore your body."

In "Outside," her longing for commitment is evident as she implores her lover to meet her halfway. "Omwenge," one of Sankofa's lead singles, finds Azawi exploring the consequences of intoxication, confessing her feelings to someone while acknowledging that these emotions might remain unspoken when she's sober.

The album gracefully concludes with the second-to-last track, "My God." It's characterized by acoustic guitar strings and mellow percussion. While Azawi delivers most of her verses in her native dialect, the lyrics revolve around seeking solace in a higher power during challenging and dark moments. Sankofa comes to a close with the bonus track "Ten Over 10," a vibrant fusion of Dancehall and Afro-Pop elements. Here, Azawi openly expresses her admiration for her partner, underscoring their perfection in her eyes and her contentment in their love.

Sankofa is a delightful project where Azawi seamlessly interweaves elements of Afrobeats and Amapiano into her distinct East African sound. Throughout the album, she effortlessly explores themes of love, desire, devotion, and self-discovery, showcasing her versatility as an artist. This 16-track (plus one bonus) derives its strength from a unique blend of heartfelt ballads, lively rhythms, and powerful collaborations with artists across Africa, creating a well-rounded and fulfilling musical experience.
