Amapiano, a Zulu word which translates to “The Pianos,” started as an underground movement in the late 2000s and early 2010s as the popularity of the Kwaito declined while that of House music rose. This music genre has its roots deeply connected to the Gauteng province, one of the smallest provinces in South Africa by land area, with a population of about 15 million. It began as a genre played in DJ sets, house parties, and lounges.

Amapiano incorporates the elements of  lounge music (popular in the country’s township), Kwaito (a dominant genre in South Africa in the post-apartheid era), and house music. These incorporated genres are drawn from South Africa’s pop music catalog and have played significant roles in both the political and creative landscape of South Africa. The amapiano genre comprises piano melodies, deep basslines, distinctive and explosive log drums, and low-tempo percussions.

A few key figures in the development of amapiano are producer/artist Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, DBN Gogo, De Mthuda, MFR Souls, and Kwiish SA. These artists have helped popularize the genre, bringing it to the forefront of South Africa music space.

One of the factors attributed to the rise of Amapiano's global appeal and prominence is its distinctive sound, which sets it apart from other forms of electronic music. Its blend of street-driven Kwaito, classy jazz, and deep house music creates an energetic and engaging atmosphere that can be adapted from chilled, relaxing spaces to the pulsating dancefloor.

However, despite its bright prospects, the genre still faces challenges. The market is becoming oversaturated due to the large number of artists with unique styles. The emergence of new artists could dilute the original sound of the genre to cater to a new global market, potentially compromising the genre’s authenticity.

Amapiano has come a long way from its humble beginnings in the townships of South Africa to the global stage. The genre has not only bridged cultural gaps but has also put South Africa, its music, and its artists on the global map. Its rhythms and its ability to resonate with audiences make it a genre for the future. Unlike its predecessors, Kwaito and Barcadi, amapiano is poised to become a lasting sound for decades to come.
