Amapiano, a Zulu word which translates to “The Pianos,” started as an underground movement in the late 2000s and early 2010s as the popularity of the Kwaito declined while that of House music rose. This music genre has its roots deeply connected to the Gauteng province, one of the smallest provinces in South Africa by land area, with a population of about 15 million. It began as a genre played in DJ sets, house parties, and lounges.

Amapiano incorporates the elements of  lounge music (popular in the country’s township), Kwaito (a dominant genre in South Africa in the post-apartheid era), and house music. These incorporated genres are drawn from South Africa’s pop music catalog and have played significant roles in both the political and creative landscape of South Africa. The amapiano genre comprises piano melodies, deep basslines, distinctive and explosive log drums, and low-tempo percussions.

A few key figures in the development of amapiano are producer/artist Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, DBN Gogo, De Mthuda, MFR Souls, and Kwiish SA. These artists have helped popularize the genre, bringing it to the forefront of South Africa music space.
