Hip-hop has always thrived on competition, and beef has been a central element of the genre. It's a customary tradition for rappers to call each other out using diss tracks. Whether it’s a battle driven by ego or just a lyrical face-off, it elevates artists and their careers.

In Nigeria, the story of hip-hop beef isn’t much different because Nigerian hip-hop has witnessed its fair share of lyrical wars, from Mode 9 vs Ruggedman to Vector vs. M.I Abaga. The question remains: does beef help draw attention to the music industry, or is it just unnecessary drama?

According to Ghanaian rapper and lyricist Manifest, “Attention is the new currency; it’s what people feed on, and beef in music is the easiest way to get that.” And boy! Was he right?

In a time when streaming numbers and online engagement drive success, nothing gets attention faster than two artists going up against each other.

A prime example was the 2019 beef between Vector and M.I. What started as subtle jabs on Martell Cypher II: Purification and The Purge, quickly escalated into full-blown diss tracks at a time when Afrobeats was overshadowing Nigerian rap, with M.I. dropping The Viper and Vector responding with Judas the Rat.

The back-and-forth not only dominated conversations but also boosted their streaming numbers, reintroduced old fans to Nigerian hip-hop, reminded people of the lyrical prowess still present in the industry, and brought new listeners into the fold.

Further back, Ruggedman vs. Mode 9 was a classic case of mainstream success vs. lyrical credibility. Ruggedman, known for his commercial appeal, clashed with the underground king of rhymes Mode 9. This sparked debates among fans about the state of Nigerian rap and what truly defined greatness. This gave rise to Ruggedman's classic line, "If you wanna talk about me, talk am make I hear, I no get two heads so make you no fear," in his single titled, To Whom It May Concern.

One of the longest-running rap beefs in Africa originated from South Africa’s hip-hop scene—AKA vs Cassper Nyovest. What started as a minor disagreement quickly became a year-long feud with multiple diss tracks, social media wars, and confrontations.

The tension between the two peaked when Cassper dropped Dust to Dust, a brutal diss track aimed at AKA. In response, AKA fired back with Composure, laced with subliminal shots at Cassper. Beyond the music, their beef escalated into real-life confrontations, including a reported club altercation.

Despite attempts to squash the feud over the years, the rivalry played a massive role in keeping South African hip-hop in the limelight, forcing both artists to level up their craft consistently.

Before AKA’s tragic passing in 2023, there were already signs of reconciliation between the two. Casper paid tribute with his song Candlelight from his album Solomon, acknowledging his influence on the game and showing remorse that they didn’t get to settle their beef.

Ghanaian hip-hop has also seen its share of rap wars, but none as intellectually charged as Sarkodie vs. M.anifest. Unlike other beef that gets messy, this one played out like a battle of wit and lyrical dominance.

In 2016, Sarkodie’s Bossy was met with a response from M.anifest’s godMC, subtly positioning himself as the true king of Ghanaian rap, triggering a back-and-forth as Sarkodie quickly responded with Kanta, calling out M.anifest for being too academic and trying to seek validation, dividing Ghanaian hip hop fans with some favoring M.anifest’s intellectual wordplay and others siding with Sarkodie’s aggressive delivery.

Surprisingly in 2022, they collaborated on the track Brown Paper Bag, squashing the longstanding standoff.

Inter-Industry Beefs: When The Feud Cross Borders

The continent has experienced intense rivalries and conflicts between artists across different countries, often driven by pride, ego, or competition.

Recently, the battle between Blaqbonez from Nigeria and Khaligraph Jones from Kenya is noteworthy. Ignited when Blaqbonez questioned Khaligraph Jone’s win at the Soundcity MVP Awards. Khaligraph didn’t take it lightly and cooked up a reply with Best Rapper in Nigeria, firing straight shots at Blaqbonez. He then responded with Green Blaq Green, proving that shades can cross borders.

Another intense cross-border feud was Dremo vs. Sarkodie, where the Nigerian rapper felt overlooked and tried to challenge the Ghanaian rapper to prove his dominance. Although this didn’t escalate like the others, because Sarkodie decided not to acknowledge Dremo's diss, Lyrical Joe jumped on, bought the case, and decided to diss on behalf of his mentor, giving rise to classics like Femi Raymond and If You Cedis, when are you Ghana Reply.

Then there’s Lyrical Joe vs. Jovi, a heated Ghana vs. Cameroon rap feud that saw both artists exchanging multiple diss tracks. With Jovi coming for Lyrical Joe's rap style, saying it was unoriginal, Lyrical Joe went in on the Cameroonian industry in one of his tracks, saying what it takes to be a star in Cameroon is what it takes to be an underground artist in Ghana. This back-and-forth captured the attention of rap fans across Africa.

But does this beef always have a positive impact? Well, the answer is - not necessarily. While some lyrical rivalries elevate the culture and challenge artists to be at the top of their game, others might devolve into unnecessary personal attacks, overshadowing the music. A good example is when beef gets too personal and starts involving physical confrontations or social media campaigns and bants to tear the other person down instead of just staying within the music.

While we are still in an era where attention is the most valuable currency, there’s no denying that rap beef and other controversies can be strategic marketing tools. The main thing is how it’s handled.

When properly done—kept strictly within the confines of artistry—it pushes the culture forward and the artists to their best. It sparks conversations, keeps the genre alive, and reminds listeners that rap is, at its core, about skill, wit, and competition.

Beef is a double-edged sword. It can either propel an artist into the spotlight or expose weaknesses in their craft, as Nigerians say, "If Your Skin No Full, No Put Body."
