The Fulani are a nomadic, large group of people, mostly Muslims, that live in communities spread over Sub-Saharan Africa. Their communities cut across Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Senegal, and Guinea.

Among these divisions is the artisan caste, encompassing professions like blacksmithing, pottery, storytelling (griots), woodworking, and tailoring.

The expertise in this caste is passed down through generations. This storytelling element within Fula music is a crucial aspect, ensuring that rhythms and melodies are transmitted across generations, thereby preserving the authenticity of their musical heritage.

Also, the nomadic lifestyle and migration of the Fulani have exposed them to many cultures and musical styles, leading to the adoption of diverse musical elements like the West African Kora, which is similar to the hoddu.

Additionally, Islam has significant religious influence among the Fulani with a developmental impact on their music. The Fula people adopted Arabic musical elements like melodies and chants (ululation). Also, contemporary Fula music often incorporates modern instruments, electronic elements, and global musical trends while maintaining its traditional origin.

In conclusion, Fula music often employs different rhythm patterns or time signatures while playing but common rhythm elements prevalent are the syncopated and polyrhythmic nature of the music. This prevalent African music element contributes to the rich tapestry of influences that shape Fula music, making it a vibrant and evolving musical tradition.
