While often associated with Ghana and Nigeria, the history of Highlife cannot be separated from that of Liberia. The Kru people, with their palm-wine music traditions and seafaring culture, played a critical role in spreading early Highlife styles across West African coasts, positioning Liberia as one of the lesser-discussed but significant contributors to the genre's development.

The actual origin of Highlife has long been debated, with Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia all presenting strong claims. While Ghana holds the most visible association, Liberia's role, especially through Kru sailors and cross-border exchanges, remains a big part of that story.

A key figure in Liberia's highlife story is Morris Dorley, often referred to as the Godfather of Liberian music. After learning palm-wine guitar styles, he formed the Sunset Boys and went on to shape the electric Highlife scene in Liberia. His hits, such as Grand Gedeh Oh! Oh! established him as a pioneer who fused Liberian identity with the evolving Highlife sound, while later hits like Ngangama, a Merengue-Highlife, stamped his creativity.

In today's Liberian musical landscape, highlife exists in a far more complex position. On one hand, artists like CIC, one of Liberia's popular contemporary artists, have been recognized by digital streaming platforms as symbols of The New Liberia, even being featured as the face of Audiomack Africa's Highlife and The New Liberia playlists. Alongside him, musicians such as GRLDN have experimented with mashups of classic Liberian Highlife, drawing attention to the country's rich music.

However, the industry reality tells a different story entirely. Highlife struggles for mainstream relevance in Liberia, where Hipco, Gbema, Afropop, and Afrobeats dominate popular attention. CIC's recent album Local Champion, released in July 2025, despite his association with Highlife, carries only little traces of the genre across its 15 tracks—highlighting how marginal Highlife's presence has become in Liberia's popular soundscape.

Highlife music in Liberia now functions primarily as cultural memory rather than commercial force—surviving in compositional fragments, nostalgic mashups, and symbolic references that preserve its legacy even as younger audiences embrace contemporary genres.
