South African singer Tyla, with the birth name Tyla Laura Seethal, clinches the highly coveted inaugural award for Best African Music Performance at the recently held Grammy Awards.

Contending for this award category were five notable artists with their outstanding songs — Asake featuring Olamide with "Amapiano," Davido with Musa Keys presenting "UNAVAILABLE," Burna Boy's "City Boys," Ayra Starr's "Rush," and Tyla’s “Water.”

“Water,” by Tyla, a fusion of Amapiano, R&B, and Afrobeats, was released July 28, 2023, through Fax and Epic Records. In August, it gradually began to trend on the short-form video, TikTok, after Tyla posted a video of her performing the song on stage. Then came the water challenge trending in 2023 with the hashtags #TylaWater and #TylaWaterChallenge. The challenge had a combined 448.6 million views, with the song used in over 500,000 videos on the app.
