Ekundayo Phillips, a distinguished organist and choirmaster, further guided his development, introducing him to European sacred music while he completed his formal education at CMS Grammar School and King's College in Lagos.

In 1934, Sowande's life took a pivotal turn when he traveled to the United Kingdom. Though he initially intended to study engineering, his passion for music ultimately prevailed. He pursued musical studies at the University of London and Trinity College of Music, earning a Bachelor of Music degree and becoming a Fellow of Trinity College.

During his time in Britain, Sowande established himself as a versatile musician, working as a church and theater organist, dance pianist, bandleader, and choirmaster. This period proved transformative as he began developing his distinctive compositional voice—one that harmoniously blended European classical structures with the rhythmic and melodic richness of his Yoruba heritage.

Sowande's wartime contribution came through his role as a musical advisor for the British Ministry of Information during World War II. In 1957, he toured the United States as a lecturer and guest conductor, introducing American audiences to the possibilities of African-influenced classical music.

The crowning achievement of Sowande's early career came in 1960 when he was commissioned to compose works celebrating Nigeria's independence. He taught at Howard University from 1968 to 1972, moved to the University of Pittsburgh until 1976, and finally served at Kent State University in Ohio until his retirement in 1982. Throughout these academic appointments, he continued his work as a composer, conductor, and musical scholar, documenting African musical traditions and creating works that bridged cultural divides.

Sowande's impressive catalog includes orchestral works like "Four Sketches" and "African Suite," alongside numerous choral pieces that remain popular in Nigeria to this day, such as "Oh Render Thanks" and "Roll De Ol' Chariot." His organ compositions, including "Yorùbá Lament" and "Obangiji," stand as masterful examples of his cross-cultural approach. In total, he composed seventeen major works for organ, including liturgical pieces, preludes, postludes, and concert works, many of which drew inspiration from Yoruba melodies, whether from indigenous Christian songs or traditional folk music.

As one of Africa's first internationally recognized classical composers, Sowande demonstrated that African musical elements could be successfully integrated into Western classical forms without sacrificing their cultural integrity. His compositions represent a powerful artistic dialogue between African and European traditions, creating pathways for future generations of composers from across the continent.

After a distinguished career spanning three continents, Olufela Sowande passed away in 1987 due to complications from a stroke. His extraordinary legacy continues to influence musicians and composers worldwide, though his contributions remain somewhat overshadowed in popular consciousness.
