In the heart of Tunisia, a mesmerizing musical genre known as Stambeli took root, weaving a rich tapestry of cultural influences and historical narratives. This captivating form of expression traces back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when enslaved individuals from sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Mali, Nigeria, and Chad, arrived on North African shores, leaving an indelible mark on the region's musical landscape. As the slaves merged their cultural rhythms with the existing North African traditions, particularly Islam, Stambeli emerged as an embodiment of their collective experiences.

The exact language of Stambeli is unknown. It’s said to be a practice of African animism, which believes in spirits - both good and bad. The music genre is a healing and religious rite that  blends music, dance, and chants which always culminates in trance-like performances.

At the core of this genre stands the Guembri, a central instrument with striking parallels to the Ngoni instrument from Mali. The resemblance extends beyond physical attributes to the very essence of their sound, bridging the gap between cultures separated by vast distances.

Ornamentation, a hallmark of musical expression, thrives within Stambeli. This intricate technique, found in both vocal and instrumental layers, mirrors the flexibility and melodic ornamentation heard in Islamic muezzin calls, showcasing the enduring influence of Arabic musical traditions. Stambeli's instrumentation is a symphony of percussive and melodic elements. The Guembri takes center stage, supported by the Krabeb, Darbuka, and, in contemporary renditions, the flute. While the Krabeb dominates the rhythm in Stambeli, the Guembri resonates with strength, entwining with other instruments to craft its distinctive character.

The singing style in Stambeli music is deeply emotive and soulful, often marked by call-and-response patterns that engage both performers and audiences. Lyrics typically touch upon themes of spirituality, healing, mysticism, and cultural identity. Stambeli songs are known to be imbued with a sense of longing, resilience, and connection to the ancestral past.

The music's mood can range from celebratory and jubilant to reflective and introspective. During Stambeli performances, participants are known to enter trance-like states, invoking spiritual energies and connecting with the unseen world. This spiritual dimension distinguishes Stambeli from other musical genres and emphasizes its importance in ceremonies and rituals.

Interestingly, it’s common for Stambeli to be mistaken for the Moroccan Gnawa genre due to shared geographical origins, instruments, spirituality, and rhythm complexity. Yet, the divergence lies in their melodic and vocal focus. Stambeli dances with rhythm and percussion, with the Krabeb claiming prominence. Meanwhile, Gnawa leans on melodic instruments, projecting its story through the resounding echoes of the Guembri.

The aura enveloping Stambeli music mirrors its roots—intense spirituality, trance-inducing rhythms, and a connection with the enigmatic.

Despite the spiritual identity of Stambeli, the genre faced a period of discrimination. It originated from the black slaves, thus,  considered a  shameful thing to do among the upper caste. Sadly, things have not been better for Stambeli as it’s reported to be becoming extinct.

Even so, there are a handful of Stambeli performers which include Riadh Ezzawech, Salah el Ouergli, Dendri Stambeli Movement, and a few others.

In conclusion, Stambeli remains a testament to the rich history and cultural amalgamation that transpired in North Africa, a musical journey that traverses time and space, inviting us to embrace its mystique and immerse ourselves in its rhythmic tales.
