These stories convey historical events, moral lessons, creation myths, and insights into life and death, often featuring animal characters. The Igbo society holds storytelling in high regard, equating the ability to tell a captivating tale with wisdom. Some popular Igbo folktales include "The Vulture and the Sky," "Mosquito and the Ear," "Leaves and the Snake-Lizard," "How Tortoise Got His Bumpy Shell," and "Mother Kite and Daughter Kite."

Traditionally, yam served as the staple food of the Igbo people and was particularly significant during ceremonial occasions. However, more recently, jollof rice and other dishes have gained popularity. Additionally, the Igbo people have a diverse range of starchy foods, including cassava, cocoyam, maize, and plantains, which contribute to their rich cuisine. They are renowned for their mouth-watering delicacies such as Abacha, Okpa, Nkwobi, and Isi Ewu.

Igbo music relies heavily on percussion instruments, and the traditional musical landscape incorporates instruments such as the Udu, Opi/Oja flute, Ogene, and drums. The Igbo people use musical instruments not only for creating music but also as a means of communication with both humans and spirits.

Opi/Oja (Talking Flute): The Opi/Oja is a wooden flute that holds great significance in Igbo music. It serves as the soul of Igbo music, enabling communication with the gods, appeasing restless spirits, and providing strength to the weak. Skilled Oja players, known as Ogbuoja, perform at festive celebrations and are often associated with kings, revered masquerades, and community heroes, especially warriors.

Ikolo/Ikoro (Slit Drum): The Ikoro is a large stationary sacred drum used for communication in Igbo communities. It is exclusively housed in village squares, and when its sound reverberates, all activities come to a halt. The ikolo signals the defilement of the land, the outbreak of war, a community calamity, or the loss of a member of the royal family, prompting the immediate gathering of the people at the village square.

Ogene: The Ogene is one of the most important metal musical instruments in Igbo culture, believed to invoke ancestral spirits. The instrument consists of metallic bells struck to produce a loud, sharp sound. Ogene is commonly used as the primary instrument in creating the popular Ogene music of the Igbo people. Additionally, town criers employ Ogene to make announcements and disseminate information within the community.

Ichaka (Guard Rattle): The Ichaka is an instrument made from a calabash or gourd. It produces sound through shaking or tapping, thanks to beads sewn into a net surrounding the instrument. Two types of Ichaka exist: the calabash Ichaka and the Ichaka Ube.

Igba (Cylinder Drum): The Igba is a hollow wooden piece covered with animal hide, tightly secured with fasteners. It produces sound when the hide is beaten with fingers. Igba is played alongside other musical instruments by musicians and masquerade drummers. It is prominently featured in the performances of the renowned Enugu music band, Pammy Udu Bunch.

Ùdù: Ùdù, derived from the Igbo word for "vessel," is a traditional musical instrument predominantly played by Igbo women. It typically takes the form of a clay water pot with an additional hole, played ceremonially. By cutting a hole in the side of the jar, artisans create a unique bass sound when a hand is placed over the top opening. Larger Ùdù instruments are played using leather shaped like a hand fan, while smaller ones can be played with hands alone.

The Igbo calendar constitutes a distinctive traditional timekeeping system among the Igbo people, though its observance is not universal. According to this calendar, a year (Afo) consists of 13 months, a month (Onwa) is composed of 7 weeks, and a week (Izu) comprises 4 days known as Igbo market days (Eke, Orie, Afor, Nkwo). The market days derive their name from the activities associated with each day and hold significant cultural value.

Eke (M): Representing the Sun, Eke is the first day and head of the Igbo market days. Children born on this day often bear names like Nweke, Okeke, Mgbeke, or Ekemma.

Orie (F): Representing Water, Orie is the second market day of the week. Names given to children born on this day might include Nworie, Mgborie, or Okorie.

Afor (M): Symbolizing Land, Afor is the third market day of the week. Names like Okafor, Nwafor, Mgbafor, or Adaafor are often associated with children born on this day.

Nkwo (F): Representing Air, Nkwo is the fourth market day of the week. Children born on this day may bear names such as Okoronkwo, Nwankwo, or Adankwo.

While market day observances have evolved due to modernization, some villages continue to uphold their significance. Certain Igbo communities have also adjusted the 13-month calendar to align with the Gregorian calendar's twelve months.

The Igbo people traditionally engaged in farming, craftsmanship, and trade. Men excelled in creating various arts and crafts, including drum carving, mask carving, door and panel construction for houses, as well as the crafting of stools, masquerade masks, boxes, and gold and bronze items. Women showcased their skills in crafts such as raffia weaving, pottery making, spinning, basketry, and grass plaiting.
