The story of the Oriental Brothers goes beyond their legendary music rather it spotlights the unwavering determination of their founder, Chief Ferdinand Dan-Satch Emeka Opara, who hails from Ngor Okpala, Imo State. It is the tale of a young man who traded his mechanic tools for the uncertainties of music in the post-Biafran War era despite the devastation caused by the war.

It all began with the band Eastern Mysteries, led by Mr. Obiakor, featuring Dan-Satch’s brother, John Ikediala, as the lead vocalist. The band frequently performed in Nsukka, but John struggled to find success. Dan-Satch, the ever-supportive brother, encouraged John to leave the band and promised to form a new one for him. After abandoning his career as a mechanic, Dan-Satch began scouting for vocalists and instrumentalists to join the band. With the support of Oliver Biaduo, the owner of Ambima Hotel in Enugu, they embarked on their musical journey between 1971 and 1972.

However, it was an uphill task. Music offered little financial return, and securing record deals seemed out of reach. In a bid for better prospects, they headed to Kano at the invitation of John’s brother, Japhet Ikediala, but it was a futile trip. Returning to Owerri, morale plummeted, and members abandoned the group. After a brief hiatus, Dan-Satch rekindled the vision. The lineup now included John Ikediala, Kabaka (Godwin Opara) on guitar, Sir Warrior (Christogonus Ezebuiro Obinna) as lead vocalist, Livinus Alaribe (Aquila) on conga, and Fred Ahumaraeze (Ichita).

A turning point came when Dan-Satch’s brother-in-law, Maazi James Azubuike, invited them to perform at his Easy Going Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos. The band honored the invitation but before the band could gain success,  John Ikediala left the group. Despite the setback, Dan-Satch did not give up, rather he fully took on the band's responsibilities since he was the one who recruited the band members.

While at the Easy Going Hotel, Dan-Satch's band shared the stage with a resident band from Cameroon. The former band drew inspiration from the Cameroonian band style and incorporated it into their own music. This marked the refinement of their signature sound, characterized by layered guitars—four lead guitars and a bass. Their performances caught the eye of Victor Nwogwugwu, a receptionist at Afrodisia (Decca West African Recording Company), who connected them to a record deal.

In 1973, their debut single, "Ihe Chinyere M" (What God has given to me), hit the airwaves. Still, without an official name, Dan-Satch christened them the Oriental Brothers, inspired by the biblical wise men from the East. The success of the single led to their 1974 debut album, "Oriental Brothers International," which included the timeless hit "Ihe Oma" (Good Things).

Their music became a source of inspiration and lessons to many Easterners. As their fame grew, so did internal conflicts. Kabaka left in 1977 to establish the Kabaka International Guitar Band. His replacements, Tony Awoma and Aloysius Anyanwu, later formed the State Brothers International Band. By 1978, Ichita and Aquila had also left, founding The Great Oriental Brothers International Band.

By 1980, only Dan-Satch and Sir Warrior remained. Their hit "Obinwanne" brought new success, but Sir Warrior eventually branched out to form Dr. Sir Warrior and His Oriental Brothers International Band. Despite multiple offshoots retaining the “Oriental” name, Sir Warrior achieved the most success until his death in 1999, after which his brother, Emperor Teddy Obinna, took over.

The original band now including Dan Satch, Aquila, and Sir Warrior reunited briefly in 1987 for "Anyi Abiala Ozo" (We Have Come Again) and again in 1996 for "Oriental Ga-Ebi" (Oriental Will Live). Sadly, legal battles with Decca West Africa and the loss of members cast a shadow over their efforts.

In 2022, after more than two decades of silence, their manager and promoter Blessing Agomuoh reignited their flame, producing a new album, "Anyi Abiala Ozo" (We Have Come Again), with the two surviving members - Dan Satch and Aquila. In 2023, Kabaka returned for a solo outing with "Abialam" (I have come) before passing away in 2024 at age 77.

The Oriental Brothers played a pivotal role in popularizing Igbo highlife while seamlessly blending cultural heritage with their distinct sound. Their music, rooted in the Imo dialect, also elevated the state’s cultural identity. Though aged, Dan-Satch and Aquila continue to uphold the legacy of this iconic band, ensuring their music remains timeless.
