Ethiopian jazz, also known as Ethio-jazz, is a unique genre blend of traditional orthodox Ethiopian melodies and Western Jazz influences. Emerged in the 1950s among the Armenian refugees, the Ethio-jazz was masterfully recreated by Mulatu Astatke, a renowned Ethiopian musician and arranger, now often referred to as the father or king of the genre.

Ethio-jazz is a captivating and distinctive style of music that effortlessly bridges cultural divides, bringing together individuals who are enamored with its enchanting sounds. Its soul-stirring melodies have captivated audiences around the globe, resonating deeply with its soulful tunes. The 1960s and '70s, also known as the belle époque era, are hailed as the golden age of this genre, as it was during this time that a multitude of recordings laid the cornerstone for its development. Some popular releases from the belle époque era are “Mulatu of Ethiopia (1972)” by Mulatu Astatke, “Ere Mela Mela (1975)” by Mahmoud Ahmed with the Ibex Band, “Éthiopiques series (1997)” by French musicologist Francis Falceto, and others.

This genre blends traditional Ethiopian folk music, orthodox Christian chants, Azmari traditions, and Western jazz, combining the 5-note pentatonic scale with instruments like the saxophone, pianos, and vibraphone introduced by Mulatu Astatke. Other instruments featured are guitar, bass, begena, krar, and masenqo.  The mix of traditional and modern influences creates a unique sonic composition that is familiar and exotic.

Frequently described as hypnotic, with repetitive rhythms, this genre's beauty lies in its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia from traditional fusion while remaining innovative and fresh. Using conventional scales and instruments like the Krar (a traditional 5/6 stringed lyre from Ethiopia) connects listeners to the cultural roots and the country’s ancient cultural heritage. Additionally, the incorporation of elements of Western jazz adds a more contemporary and experimental edge.

With limited use of lyrics in the genre, there's a strong emphasis on the instruments and the stories they tell, transcending language barriers, and conveying emotions through the expressive and evocative power of the instruments.

Ethiopian jazz continues to evolve, with a new generation of artists and bands in Ethiopia and abroad like Esy Tadesse, Leeben Tinos, Yizzac, and the rest drawing inspiration from the genre. This effect on new-generation artists has kept the genre’s flag flying high and sustained its position in mainstream Ethiopian music.
