The Oyo Empire fell apart because of fights between its own people, problems with succession, and outside forces. This caused a lot of chaos in Yorubaland. This time, which is often linked to the larger Yoruba Wars, led to a breakdown of political power and more danger. Many people moved across borders into nearby areas, including parts of what is now Benin, in search of safety.

The Kingdom of Dahomey also became a strong and expansionist state at the same time. Dahomey launched a number of military campaigns into nearby areas, including Yoruba-speaking areas, after breaking free from Oyo's rule. Border kingdoms like Kétou were attacked many times, and in 1886, Kétou was taken over, which caused death, destruction, and the displacement of its people. These fights were often violent and were partly caused by the demand for slaves during the time of the transatlantic slave trade. Because of this, a lot of Yoruba people had to run away, move, or were caught and spread out.

These wars and political upheavals were very important in shaping how people moved around. Yoruba communities had already been established in Benin through earlier expansion. However, the conflicts of the 1800s made movement more common, which led to the spread of Yoruba people across larger parts of West Africa. Refugees moved to new places, often living with people from other ethnic groups. This made areas where languages and cultures mixed. Changes in language and intonation can be understood in the context of migration and contact. Yoruba is a tonal language, which means that changes in pitch are important for understanding. When Yoruba speakers moved to places where other languages were spoken, like Fon and related Gbe languages, they began to interact with those languages over time, which caused changes in pronunciation and tone. Bilingualism became common, and people often used the same intonation patterns in both languages. Over time, this led to different regional versions of Yoruba, especially in Benin, where tone realization, rhythm, and accent may be a little different from what they are in southwestern Nigeria.

It changed how people express their religion. Yoruba belief systems, especially those related to Orisha worship, depend on music, chant, and rhythm a lot for spiritual communication. In Benin, where Yoruba communities were close to Fon Vodun traditions, there was some religious exchange and development that happened at the same time. The main Yoruba beliefs stayed the same, but musical invocations and ritual rhythms sometimes picked up local styles, which made performance practice different but kept the spiritual meaning.

Music and oral performance traditions have had one of the biggest effects on culture. Tone and rhythm are closely linked in Yoruba music systems, which is why they are so closely related to language. Even with migration and contact with other cultures of West Africa bringing in new influences, the tonal basis of Yoruba expression ensured continuity across borders. Thus, music was not only a form of entertainment but a living archive of language, identity, and historical movement.
