Azonto is believed to have been originally called “Apaa” which means to work. Apaa is a dance style used to show the profession of an individual, unlike the dance style, azonto has since grown further to relay other themes outside of one’s profession. The dance is connected to Kpanlogo, a traditional Ga dance associated with the coastal towns in the country such as Chorkor, Jamestown, Teshie, Nungua, and Tema, in the Greater Accra Region.

Azonto genre originated from Bukom, Chorkor and James Town in Accra where it was first called "Apaa" (work for pay). Apaa is a form of dance that either mimics everyday activities, especially ones concerning people's livelihoods,or moves that are meant to amuse an audience. It is also believed that Azonto is an indigenous dance whose origins can roughly be traced to a traditional dance, Kpalongo, belonging to the Ga ethnic group in the coastal towns.
