BioPure Gold is a South African gospel group formed in 1973 in Mzimhlophe, near Soweto, by Freddy Gwala alongside his brothers and cousins. Blending traditional African harmonies, church influences, and township soul, they became known for their rich vocal arrangements and spiritual energy. Their 1987 album "Siyabonga Baba," produced by Blondie Makhene, marked their breakthrough and gained international attention. Over the years, the group’s lineup included Freddy, Patric, Jafta, Victor, and Paulos Gwala, among others. Rooted in the Old Apostolic Church tradition, Pure Gold helped shape modern South African gospel and inspired the fusion style later known as “Zumba.” Their legacy continues through performances and recordings. In 2024, they won the InterContinental Music Award for “Best of Africa | African RnB/Soul,” affirming their enduring influence on gospel and African soul music across generations.
