BioThree 6 Mafia is a pioneering Memphis hip-hop group whose dark, bass-heavy sound helped shape Southern hip-hop, horrorcore, gangsta rap, and crunk.
Formed in Memphis, Tennessee, the group grew from the underground collective founded by DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Lord Infamous, developing a style marked by ominous production, aggressive flows, and horror-inspired themes. Their early releases, including “Mystic Stylez” and “Chapter 2: World Domination,” established their underground reputation before mainstream success arrived with songs such as “Tear da Club Up '97."
Their collaborations with Project Pat, Lil Jon, UGK, and 8Ball & MJG strengthened their influence across Southern rap. In 2006, Three 6 Mafia made history when “It's Hard out Here for a Pimp,” from “Hustle & Flow,” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making them the first hip-hop group to receive the honor. Their evolving lineup and enduring influence have secured their place in rap history.
