BioFormed in 2012 in Soshanguve, Pretoria, South Africa, Uhuru is a 4-man music group comprising Nqobile Mahlanu (Mapiano), Sihle Dlalisisa (DJ Clap), Xelimpilo Simelane (Xeli), and Themba Sekowe (DJ Maphorisa). Mapiano and Xeli, friends from Soshanguve, started playing contemporary African jazz before joining forces with DJ Clap. In Uhuru, DJ Clap, Mapiano, and Xeli handle DJing, piano, and vocals. They rose to fame in 2013 with the hit "Y-tjukutja" and their involvement in "Khona" by Mafikizolo. In 2015, members pursued solo careers, and in 2016, Uhuru rebranded under new management, releasing tracks like "Own Devices" and "The Sound (Remix)," dispelling breakup rumors. The band is currently inactive.
