The mbira (pronounced m-Bee-Ra) is a traditional African musical instrument with roots among the Shona people of the Bantu tribe living in Zimbabwe (formerly Zambezi area). It belongs to the idiophone class of instruments.

Mbira is a Shona word often translated to "thumb piano" in English. Sometimes, the mbira is called Kalimba, a name given to it in 1950 by Hugh Tracey, an English ethnomusicologist.

The name “mbira” matches the unique physical characteristics of the musical instrument. It has a wooden or bamboo base (a resonator box or soundboard) with metal strips (or metal tines) of converging lengths attached to its top. These metal strips are plucked with the thumbs to make resonating sounds.

This percussion instrument falls under the classification of lamellophones. Lamellophones are a subcategory of idiophones played by plucking or striking metal strips or tines. Other examples of lamellophones are the Chinese Kouxian (a jaw-like harp),  Argentine Quisanche, Vietnamese Đàn môi, and Siberian Jews harp, to mention a few.

The mbira plays a significant role in the cultural and spiritual life of the Shona people and other African cultures. It is a sacred but constantly featured instrument in traditional celebratory or solemn ceremonies, rituals, and other communal events. It is a connector between the dead and the living, acting as a channel for ancestral communication for anyone seeking their ancestors.

As earlier described, the mbira has a wooden or bamboo base known as the resonator box, and at the top are metal strips or tines of different lengths converging at the center. Plucking the metal strips or tines helps to create distinct pitches while the resonator box enhances the sound quality and produces a unique timbre. The arrangement of the strips and the craftsmanship of the resonator also play vital roles in the tonal quality of a mbira.

Learning to play this African musical instrument is easy. Playing it requires only the two thumbs and the forefingers and mastering the skill of intricate finger movements. The other fingers - middle, ring, and pinky- are used to hold the resonator box. The thumbs play the central role, producing melodic patterns that create enchanting, rhythmic sounds peculiar to the mbira.

The mbira is accompanied by hand-clapping, singing, dancing, and other percussion instruments, such as the drums and traditional shakers.

The mbira has roots in the Shona oral traditions. Its rich knowledge of history and traditions is passed down verbally from one generation to another. As a result, each performance is unique since there is room for improvisation by the instrument player.

Over the years, this musical instrument has found its place in modern music at home and abroad. Its unique timbre and rhythmic sounds have found its place in modern-day music. A peculiar example is Thomas Mapfumo. The father of Chimurenga combined the mbira sounds with Western instruments such as keyboard, guitar, brass, and modern drum sets in chimurenga music.

Also, earlier, the mbira was played only by men (such as Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Chartwell Dutiro) because of the patriarchal nature of African societies. Today, there are female mbira players such as Beulah Dyoko (the first female pioneer mbira player), Stella Chiweshe (another pioneer player), Hope Masike, and Chiwoniso Maraire.

In conclusion, the mbira has not only taken on the identity of just a musical instrument of the Shona people; it has become a cultural symbol, a spiritual medium, and a source of inspiration for many. It remains a symbol of African musical instrument heritage.
