Talented Cameroon-based Nigerian artist Ishaku returns to the scene with his first body of work after a two-year hiatus. The six-track EP titled, "When I Was A Lover," released in time for the  romantic season in February, explores the complexities of love and personal growth.

With a listening party held at Yunicks, Yaoundé, the project has gained attention from fans across Africa, proving that Ishaku’s talents continue to thrive and resonate far and wide.

Opening the EP is Poison, which sets the tone for the project. Right from the first note, lush melodic lines pullisteners in before Ishaku delivers his lyrics confidently. He speaks of his street credibility and intelligence, making it clear that he is not just another artist but one with depth and experience. The blend of instruments with his delivery creates a powerful opener.

The second track, Miracle, continues the EP’s carefully crafted soundscape. The song comes in with ease and soothing chords before King Jedai jumps in as the first featured artist on the project. Together, they deliver a plea for a breakthrough, acknowledging the struggles one has to overcome while chasing his dreams. The track is layered over a dancehall-driven beat, giving it a rhythmic energy that makes it both introspective and danceable as both artists' chemistry shines bright.

Sitting third on the EP is the standout track, the pre-released track Healer, which had already built anticipation before the official release of the project. From the bubbling six-track project, this song takes center stage with its crisp melodic approach. Ishaku delivers a futuristic Afrobeats tune that reminds listeners of Nigeria’s Nonso Amadi and Wurld. The song incorporates a choral and call-and-response element, creating an undeniable groove.

The fourth track, Ummm Muah, is a classic club jam. Featuring Latin artist Sainttlucas, it brings a new and refreshing flavor to the EP. The fusion of Latin and dancehall influences creates a lively and energetic track that feels right at home on any dancefloor.

Ishaku and producer Rex OTB carefully slow things down on the fifth track, Reason. His emotions take the limelight as he serenades his lover with heartfelt lyrics, opening up about his devotion to making their relationship work. The warm production and gentle delivery of the track creates a deeply intimate moment on the EP.

Closing out the project is Can I, a deeply personal, relatable, and introspective track. Ishaku tackles the idea of vulnerability, contemplating whether he should reveal his biggest and deepest fears to his lover. He asks for a promise that she won’t tell anyone else, creating a sense of tension and trust that lingers in the air.

With When I Was a Lover, Ishaku crafts an EP that is both emotionally rich and acoustically diverse with both featured artists and Rex OTB playing a key role. Using introspective lyrics and club-ready jams, he showcases his ability to navigate different moods effortlessly.
