BioAba Shanté is a South African kwaito group formed in the early 1990s under the mentorship of Arthur Mafokate through his influential 999 Music label. Emerging during the formative years of post-apartheid kwaito, the group played a key role in shaping the sound and identity of South Africa’s urban youth music culture.
Their style fused house-driven beats with ragga, reggae influences, and township rhythms, complemented by energetic, dance-oriented performances and DJ-style vocal delivery. The original lineup included Iyaya “Queen” Sesoko, Zanele “Nestum” Njakale, Hazel “Ma-H” Mzolo, and Abel “Aba” Golele.
They debuted with the album "Girls" (1996), followed by projects such as "Settlin’ Tha Score," "Dreams," "Intwenjani?," "Vuk’ Uzenzele," and "Ayoyo."
The group gained prominence in the mid-to-late 1990s kwaito movement but experienced several lineup changes and member losses over time.
Aba Shanté remains recognised as one of the pioneering female-led kwaito acts that helped define the genre’s early mainstream success in South Africa.
