BioLt. Col. J.M.M. Wambua of the 7th Battalion Kenya Rifles founded the Maroon Commandos in 1970. Captain Muchemi recruited the band, which included Habel Kifoto and the strollers band, after finding them playing at Nairobi's Bamboo nightclub. They took on the name Maroon Commandos in 1970 and signed with PolyGram Studio in 1971, releasing the hit song "Emily." A tragic road accident in 1972 claimed the life of one of their members, which saw a decline in the band's activity for five years. Following this incident, the band relocated to Nairobi Langata Barracks, recruited new members, and continued to produce music, leading to the release of "Charonyi Ni Wasi," which became a chart-topping hit. The Maroon Commandos became a household name again in Kenya; their music achieved classic status; and they continue to carry on their traditions and celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2020.
