Sitting at my desk and reading the recent reviews of Burna Boy’s newly released album "I Told Them," my thoughts began to wander towards other African music giants such as Rema, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Kuami Eugene, Asake, and Sarkodie, among others, who are gracing global stages. This led me to contemplate whether any of them had access to music education during their formative years, whether formal or informal. Perhaps we can attribute opportunities to church choirs for individuals like Don Jazzy and D'Banj in their early years, or to those with a natural aptitude for music and instrument learning like Gito Baloi, Mdou Moctar, and Jimmy Omonga. Some were fortunate enough to start under the guidance of professionals before venturing out on their own. Meanwhile, individuals such as King Sunny Ade, Salif Keita, Chaka Chaka, and others have remained steadfast in their commitment to music, evolving into icons of both music and African culture over the years.

Yet, there are those who never had the chance and, sadly, will never get to use their musical talents to captivate music enthusiasts or etch their mark on the enduring wall of African music fame.

What opportunities will future generations, particularly those on the cusp of tomorrow, have? Can we rely on luck to favor them? What are the odds?

You and I can choose to effect change today. How can we make a difference?

The African Music Library (AML) launched a not-for-profit organization called Foster.

Foster is an African music education mission dedicated to bringing the gift of music education to children in disadvantaged African communities, helping them realize and pursue their artistic aspirations. Our singular mission is to raise a new generation of confident and resilient individuals (particularly children) who possess a deep appreciation for African music, as well as the skills and knowledge to pursue their artistic aspirations.

In the past few months, our journey with the Foster mission has been marked by remarkable progress. We've already made a significant impact, reaching nearly 40 children who have embraced a profound appreciation for African music, its iconic figures, diverse ensembles, and genres. With the upcoming school term in September, our plans include not only teaching these young minds how to play musical instruments, but also extending the Foster mission to more schools across Nigeria and potentially other African nations.
